U.S. EPA EXTENDS COMMENT PERIOD FOR CALAVERAS CEMENT PERMIT

   (San Francisco)--  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced that it has extended by two weeks the deadline for the public to submit comments on the proposed new air permit for the Calaveras Cement Co. facility, located north of Highway 58 approximately three miles east of Tehachapi, Calif.  U.S. EPA will accept written comments up until the new deadline, July 15.  U.S. EPA moved to extend the deadline in response to a request from the local community.

     The facility applied for a permit to allow for expansion and modernization of its operations.  U.S. EPA held a public hearing on the proposed permit on June 27 at Tehachapi High School.  

     Copies of the proposed permit can be viewed at the offices of the Kern County Air Pollution Control District, 2700 M St., Suite 290, Bakersfield, CA 93301.  For further information, interested parties can call Bob Baker, U.S. EPA, at (415) 744-
