PRESIDENTIAL GREEN CHEMISTRY
CHALLENGE WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The winners of the 2000 Presidential Green Chemistry Award were announced on June 26 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. Some of the winners are: Professor Chi-Huey Wong of the Scripps Research Institute for innovative use of enzymes as catalysts in organic synthesis; Rev. Tech Inc. for developing a technique for decorating glass containers that is environmentally friendly as well as aesthetically pleasing, durable and cost-effective; Roche Colorado Corporation for developing a new and efficient synthesis of the potent antiviral agent ganciclovir (CytoveneR), a drug used to treat patients whose immune systems have been compromised, including those with AIDS; Dow AgroSciences for the development of the Sentricon (TM) Termite Colony Elimination System, a technology based on an EPA-registered reduced risk pesticide. President Clinton established the Green Chemistry Awards in 1995 to promote pollution prevention and industrial ecology. Five winners were selected from the more than 80 nominations that were reviewed by an independent panel of technical experts. More information see: https://www.epa.gov/greenchemistry.
