(Dallas, Texas – January 18, 2007) The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $250,000 to the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) to help promote objectives of the Border 2012 program. Border 2012 is a binational environmental program created to protect the environment and the public’s health along the U.S.-Mexico border. Rapid population and industrial growth have resulted in environmental challenges in border areas. Inadequate management of drinking water, sanitation, air pollution, and hazardous waste are common problems in border communities. BECC, a binational institution created through a supplemental agreement to the North American Free Trade Agreement, will use the funds to promote environmental projects to improve living standards in border communities in accordance with the Border 2012 Program.
