(Kansas City, Kan., May 9, 2011) – EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson will visit Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Mo., on Wednesday, May 11, to highlight May as National Asthma Awareness Month. During her Kansas City visit, Administrator Jackson will share information with the public about EPA’s initiatives to bring awareness to the disease, and will formally recognize the newly established Center for Environmental Health at Children’s Mercy. The Administrator will also discuss EPA’s recently-proposed Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, which would prevent 120,000 cases of childhood asthma symptoms each year.

The parent of a child with asthma, Administrator Jackson will tour Children’s Mercy’s nationally-known pediatric asthma care facilities and visit with patients and their families, as well as hospital researchers, administrators, physicians and staff. Administrator Jackson will also address a group of healthcare community stakeholders about asthma awareness and EPA’s continuing efforts to improve the nation’s air quality, prior to participating in an open press conference. All of the events hosted at Children’s Mercy will be open to press coverage.
