US EPA HOLDS OPEN HOUSE TO DISCUSS SOIL SAMPLING IN MCFARLAND

     (San Francisco)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) will hold an open house to discuss upcoming soil sampling activities in McFarland, Calif.  The soil sampling is part of U.S. EPA's investigation to determine current environmental conditions in the community's water, soil and air.  The investigation is in response to a petition by some McFarland residents who requested help in assessing the community's potential environment.

     The public is invited to attend an open house to discuss sampling activities Tuesday, November 10, 1998, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the McFarland Community Center, 107 Sherwood Ave., McFarland, Calif.  Representatives from the Agency will also be available to discuss the plans.  

     Another open house to discuss the results of the second phase of the drinking water investigation will be held as soon the Agency receives all the results, reviews and shares them with the individual residents who participated in the investigation.  The first phase of the drinking water investigation which tested McFarland's municipal water wells in 1997 found the water meets all standards and is safe to drink.  U.S. EPA tested the water for more than 300 potential contaminants in one of the most extensive chemical analyses of municipal wells ever conducted.

     Plans for the air investigation have not been completed yet.
