BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that three projects in New Hampshire have received a total of $27,919 in environmental education grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Awards were given to the Audubon Society of New Hampshire ($12,500); Merrimack River Watershed Council ($10,419) and the N.H. Project Learning Tree ($5,000).

The Audubon Society of New Hampshire will use its award for a docent training program for the Northern New England Science Center Collaborative in Concord, which was formed to examine the issue of global warming. The money will help train docents and teachers on current climate change concepts and potential changes to the region's ecosystem and will help expose science center staff to cutting edge science in the climate change being conducted in new England.

The Merrimack River Watershed Council will hold three teacher workshops for 20 eighth grade educators in Manchester, NH, to help them implement an environmental education curriculum geared towards the river.

The New Hampshire Project Learning Tree will use the funds for a project to raise awareness among teachers and students about environmental issues in N.H. forests. The project will develop fact sheets and resource lists that examine these contemporary issues and can be used in teaching.

"These grants will help projects based in New Hampshire educate residents about their own environment and how they can help to protect it," said Robert Varney, regional administrator at EPA's New England office. "Teaching residents about the air, land and water around them is an effective, cost-efficient way to protect the environment."

EPA announced a total of $185,000 in environmental education grants to 24 New England organizations this year. These grants benefit the environment while educating students, teachers, and the public. EPA New England is currently accepting proposals for smaller grant requests.
