Calvert County Public Schools Receives $17,250 Environmental Education Grant from EPA

PHILADELPHIA - The Calvert County Public Schools received a $17,250 environmental education grant to help 1,130 students in 55 classes learn about the Chesapeake Bay’s natural beach eco-system.

Students will learn about the bay’s important habitat and how to take action to protect this fragile environment. This program will also help prepare students for the Maryland School Performance Assessment Program exam, which is administered in the third grade.

Students will learn about threats to local endangered species such as the Puritan Tiger Beetle, the Diamondback Terrapin and the Horseshoe Crab, as well as the fragility of the natural beach environment.

“The Calvert County Public School District is to be commended for teaching students about the environmental changes that have taken place in their own backyards over the last 30 years. The cliff/beach eco-system in Calvert County is a unique environment,” said Donald S. Welsh, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. In the mid-Atlantic region - which includes Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia - the 22 grant recipients included schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations. Nationally, $2 million was awarded in 2001.
