DEALE, Md. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has cited The Gott Company, for violating federal underground storage tank regulations at the Parks Liquors/Parks Citgo facility at 450 E. Bayfront Rd., Deale, Md.
The Parks Liquors/Parks Citgo facility has on its property five underground storage tanks with a total capacity of 34,000 gallons, used to store gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, and/or heating oil. EPA’s complaint alleges that The Gott Company failed to 1) follow leak detection procedures, 2) maintain leak detection records, and 3) respond to a request for information from the EPA sent in January 2000.
Leak detection procedures are designed to prevent, detect, and control leaks of petroleum and other hazardous materials from underground tanks. Leaks from underground tanks threaten groundwater supplies which are often used as a source of public drinking water.
The company is liable for penalties of up to $11,000 per day for each violation. The company has the right to a hearing to contest the alleged violations.
