CHICAGO (March 1, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has resumed its cleanup of the Mahoningside Power Plant, 650 Summit St., Warren, Ohio.
A media briefing on the project, hosted by Warren Mayor Michael O’Brien and EPA on-scene coordinator Mark Durno, will be held Wednesday, March 2, at 2 p.m., at Warren City Hall, 391 Mahoning Ave.
The site contained a hydroelectric and coal-burning power plant from the early 1900s to the mid-1970s. Buildings and other structures on the site were demolished by the city in 1999. From September 2000 to March 2001, EPA’s Westlake, Ohio, Superfund emergency response team oversaw the disposal of about 1,800 tons of PCB-contaminated debris. EPA expects to complete the cleanup by summer 2005. This will include about 15,000 additional tons of both PCB- and asbestos-contaminated materials. EPA’s total expense at the Mahongside site, including the 2005 work, is estimated at about $2.25 million. The work will be performed with an eye on eventually redeveloping the property.
