Household Hazardous Waste Collection Points Established for the Residents of Jackson County, Mississippi

ATLANTA – October 27, 2005) The U.S Environmental Protection Agency, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, along with local officials, have established a drop off station for household hazardous wastes for residents of Jackson County, Mississippi. The Neighborhood Collection Points locations are: Saturday, October 29, 2005 Upper Elementary - St. Martin Greyhound Stadium - Ocean Springs Elk Lodge - Gulf Park Estates Singing River Mall - Gautier Krebbs Ave Parking Lot - Pascagoula (next to Chamber of Commerce) Saturday, November 5, 2005 East Jackson County Facilities Complex - Moss Point Ball Park Road - Vancleave East Central Community Center Saturday, November 12, 2005 Singing River Mall - Gautier The collection points will be open from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.   Materials that may be dropped include aerosols, all purpose cleaners, ammonia, anti-freeze, automobile cleaners, batteries, brake fluid, charcoal lighter fluid, chlorine bleach, detergents, disinfectants, drain openers, furniture polish, gasoline, glass cleaners, herbicides, insecticides, mothballs, motor oil, oven cleaners, paint, paint thinners, pesticides, pool chemicals, rodent poisons, rubber cement, rug & upholstery cleaners, scouring powders, silver polish, snail & slug killers, toilet bowl cleaners, transmission fluid, tub & tile cleaners, turpentine, varnish, water seals, wood finishes, and cooking oil.  Containers should be clearly marked, and leaking containers should be put into plastic bags to prevent further spills of materials. Items that are not appropriate for drop off at the sites include: animal manure and carcasses, human waste and other biological items, needles and spoiled food. EPA has cautionary tips about household hazardous chemicals for families returning to hurricane-damaged homes, even for a short time. Keep children and pets away from leaking or spilled household chemicals. It's not safe to combine household chemicals from leaking or damaged containers or to burn them. Please, do not pour the chemicals down the drain, storm sewer or toilet. Mark containers and set them aside until they can be properly disposed thru debris programs that are being established. Leave damaged or unlabeled chemical containers undisturbed, if possible.
