THE GRAND OPENING OF PIEDMONT PARK ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in coordination with the Piedmont Park Conservancy, EcoWatch Americorps, The Georgia Conservancy, Georgia State University, The City of Atlanta, Department of Parks and Recreation and Grady High School has developed an Environmental Education Center in Piedmont Park for Metro Atlanta students and teachers. This new program is being made possible by a four-year comprehensive grant from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund and a grant from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation. This project makes it possible for urban children to spend quality time outdoors exploring and learning about the environment. Atlanta's K-12 teacher will be able to bring their students to the park to participate in hands-on learning activities in a wide variety of disciplines at the primary, middle and secondary level. Teachers will have access to the environmental education materials via the world wide web at www.epa.gov/region4/park/ and through the Piedmont Park Education Center. Teachers will receive an orientation to help them better understand the environmental activities designed for Piedmont Park. The Piedmont Park Conservancy, founded in 1989, is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Piedmont Park. The Conservancy's mission is to facilitate and contribute to the renewal and preservation of Piedmont Park as a vital, healthy green space and as a cultural and recreational resource, which enhances the quality of life for all Atlantans.
