WORCESTER, Pa. – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has cited asbestos contractor Alliance Environmental Systems Inc. of West Chester, Pa., general contractor International Management Consultants Inc. of Malvern, Pa., and T-Squared Realty L.L.C. of Blue Bell, Pa. for violating federal asbestos regulations while demolishing a building here.

EPA’s administrative complaint seeks a $24,200 penalty for alleged Clean Air Act violations during the demolition of a building owned by T-Squared, located at 1547 North Trooper Road, Worcester, Montgomery County. The project involved removing asbestos-containing shingles, panels, and insulation throughout the building.

EPA inspectors found these asbestos-containing materials left dry, broken and scattered around the demolition site and in uncovered dumpsters. Asbestos regulations require that, during a renovation or demolition, all asbestos-containing materials must be kept wetted and covered, and finally, disposed of properly. Contractors must take these measures to prevent asbestos fibers from becoming airborne and inhaled by workers and nearby residents.

Asbestos is a hazardous air pollutant that was once heavily used in insulation and other building materials. Prolonged exposure and inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause cancer and asbestosis, a serious respiratory disease.

The companies have the right to a hearing to contest the alleged violations and proposed penalty.
