Pocono Jackson Joint Water Authority receives EPA grant for new drinking water lines

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $145,500 grant to the Pocono Jackson Joint Water Authority to help pay for new drinking water lines to serve the Village of Reeders in Monroe County, Pa.

The drinking water lines are needed because seepage from a nearby Superfund site has contaminated groundwater. EPA has been providing bottled water to residences who currently rely on private wells for drinking water.

“This is an important step in providing the community with a safe, potable water system,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The new drinking water lines are an extension of an existing water system, owned and operated by the authority. The project will eliminate the use of the private wells, which will be sealed and abandoned.

The grant will pay for 55 percent of the estimated $264,545 project cost and the authority will provide remaining funds.
