EPA SPONSORS FORUM ON “RECYCLING” SUPERFUND SITES
An EPA sponsored conference, Sustainable Redevelopment: Recycling Superfund Sites Forum, will be held Sept. 2-3 in Chicago, Ill. This forum is intended to help EPA learn from experiences of people involved in the redevelopment and reuse of Superfund sites. Traditionally, EPA’s Superfund program has focused on the timely and efficient discovery, investigation and remediation of hazardous waste sites. What became of the properties after completion of the cleanup was not viewed as EPA’s primary responsibility. Many Superfund sites are located in prime locations for redevelopment such as inner cities and have tremendous potential for redevelopment or reuse. Many Superfund sites have been put into productive reuse, thereby benefiting the local community through a cleaner environment, improved economy and improved quality of life. This public meeting will give EPA an opportunity to hear from people who have been involved in redeveloping and reusing Superfund sites and to identify the appropriate role for EPA in this process. EPA will evaluate information regarding redevelopment of Superfund sites to determine if any new initiatives should be implemented to further encourage beneficial reuse of Superfund sites. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 2 in room 331 at the EPA Region 5 office, 77 West Jackson Blvd., Chicago, Ill. For more information, contact David Ouderkirk 703-603-9039; Jim Vanderkloot at 312-353-3161 or John Harris at 703-603-9075.
