FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1999
FACT FINDING MEETING ON WASTE TRANSFER STATIONS
IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

The National Environmental Justice Council (NEJAC) subcommittee on Waste and Facility Siting will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 17 to gather information that will help them accurately identify recommendations to minimize the impact of municipal waste transfer stations on minority and disadvantaged communities. Waste transfer stations are used to consolidate waste before being transported for disposal. The subcommittee passed a resolution in December 1997 to form this working group to address issues related to the closure of the Fresh Kills Landfill in New York and waste transfer stations in general. The meeting will consist of several panels including representatives from communities, technical assistance organizations, local governments, and waste trade associations. The Feb. 17 meeting will be held at the Convention Center (room 30) in Washington, D.C. from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. The working group will present its finding to EPA through the NEJAC in the summer of 1999.
