EPA recognizes 3M Company-Aberdeen as environmental leader

      Denver --The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced this week that the 3M facility in Aberdeen, S.D., has been selected as a member of the National Environmental Performance Track program.

      Performance Track recognizes and encourages top environmental performers that go beyond compliance with environmental regulations. In order to qualify for the program, the managers of these facilities have demonstrated that they have an established environmental management system, a history of sustained compliance with regulatory requirements, a commitment to continuous environmental improvement, and a community outreach program.

“By voluntarily committing to improve upon an already high level of performance, 3M's operation in Aberdeen has set a strong example of what environmental stewardship is all about,” said EPA’s Regional Administrator Robbie Roberts. “They are securing a cleaner, healthier future for us all.”

3M-Aberdeen also achieved the international standard certification for its environmental management system, a set of processes and practices that enable an organization to reduce environmental impacts and increase operating efficiency. This certification is not a criteria for acceptance into the Performance Track program, but was sought voluntarily by 3M.

The 3M facility is the second in South Dakota to enter Performance Track and joins more than 350 other public and private facilities in the program nationwide. Managers of the facility are invited to participate in an annual recognition event in April with EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt in Washington, D.C.

Performance Track is open to facilities of all types, sizes and complexity, public or private, manufacturing or service-oriented. Members receive a range of incentives such as public recognition and low inspection priority. Facilities are also eligible for several kinds of administrative flexibility and streamlined administrative requirements that reduce costs and enable members to achieve better environmental results. In addition, members benefit from special services, including a learning network of top environmental performers that has a mentoring program, tele-seminars, EPA roundtable discussions, and newsletters.
