U.S. EPA OFFERING GRANT MONEY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

  (San Francisco)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is calling on school and environmental groups with worthwhile environmental education projects and proposals to apply for grants under the National Environmental Education Act of 1990.

     The purpose of this grant program is to enhance environmental education teaching skills and curricula and to promote teamwork in improving educational methods.

     U.S. EPA awards approximately 250 grants nationwide annually.  Of that total, about 200 each year were for a federal share of $5,000 or less.  Region 9, which includes Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and the Pacific Islands, funded 25 grants totaling $186,800 in 1995.    

     Applicants may request up to $25,000 for activities taking place in Region 9.  Since half of each region's allocation is reserved for smaller grants, U.S. EPA strongly encourages applicants to develop proposals which request $5,000 or less in federal funds.
