EPA orders Lake Zurich to stop discharges of sediment
CHICAGO (Sep. 28, 2007)- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has issued an order to the village of Lake Zurich to stop discharges of sediment-laden water from Mionske Pond into Lake Zurich and give EPA a plan and schedule on how it will do so within 45 days. The village has certified that it intends to comply with the order.
The village is required to properly operate and maintain its storm sewer system. EPA alleges sediment from storm sewers is discharging into Lake Zurich in violation of water quality standards.
The village has been working to reach an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation concerning the sediment in Mionske Pond. IDOT's construction activity on Route 22 in Lake Zurich has contributed sediment to Mionske Pond.
