CHICAGO (Monday, April 10, 2006) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has awarded a $244,262 grant to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for a two-year study to assess health risks from air toxics in southwest Indianapolis neighborhoods.

The goals of the project are for IDEM, working in partnership with the city of Indianapolis, to gain an understanding of the outdoor levels of air toxics in the community, the origin of the pollutants, probable risks associated with exposure to air toxics and ultimately to reduce hazardous air pollutant emissions, exposure and overall risk.

To accomplish these goals, IDEM and the city will conduct air monitoring to assess outdoor concentrations of metals, carbonyls and volatile organic hazardous air pollutants in the area. The funds will be used to buy monitoring equipment and supplies necessary to assess pollutant concentrations, and to collect monitoring samples and do laboratory and data analysis.
