CALIFORNIA STATE EMPLOYEE SENTENCED FOR
ILLEGAL SEWAGE DISCHARGE
On April 23, Michael E. Valverde, of Oceano, Calif., a supervisor at the sewage treatment facility for the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo, was sentenced to 21 months in prison by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles. Valverde previously pleaded guilty to violating the federal Clean Water Act by discharging partially treated sewage into Chorro Creek, a tributary of the Morro Bay Estuary. Valverde also pleaded guilty to falsifying water pollution monitoring records and reports that are required to be submitted to state and federal environmental protection agencies. This case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI and the Central Coast Region of the California Regional Water Quality Control Board.
