(Lenexa, Kan., Feb. 4, 2013) - EPA will join city and county staff, planners, state and federal agency leaders, environmental justice advocates and others committed to building safer, healthier and more livable communities at an Equitable Development Workshop on Feb. 6 in Kansas City, Mo.
The workshop will discuss neighborhood revitalization and economic development approaches for low-income, minority, tribal, and other overburdened communities. Community leaders, economic developers, business representatives and regional planners will share their experiences. Interactive training sessions will teach participants how to integrate economic growth, workforce development and efficient land use to benefit members of overburdened communities. A new report on this topic will be released at the workshop.
The concept of equitable development integrates environmental justice and smart growth in the revitalization of underserved neighborhoods, incorporating a range of elements that strengthen quality of life, including housing and transportation choice, environmental and health protection, and educational, cultural and spiritual opportunities.
