EPA Sampling Shows No Health Concerns at Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club in St. Louis

(Kansas City, Kan., Oct. 5, 2010) - Parents rest easy. Responding to concerns of parents of children who attend programs at the Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club at 2901 N. Grand in St. Louis, EPA officials today reaffirmed that chemical contamination at the nearby Carter Carburetor Site is not cause for health concerns at the club.

“Parents who heard news accounts about Carter Carburetor should know that EPA studies have shown no health concerns at the Boys & Girls Club,” said Karl Brooks, regional administrator. “As was made clear at our productive public meeting on the Carter Carburetor Site last night, EPA is determined to remedy contamination at the old manufacturing site, and I pledge that EPA will finally get the Carter Carburetor Site cleaned up for productive and healthy re-use.”

EPA has conducted sampling at the Boys & Girls Club during which air samples were collected to determine if trichloroethylene (TCE) vapors are present beneath the floor of the building. The tests were designed to determine if there is a potential for vapors to intrude and accumulate in the building or any future buildings from underground contamination at the adjacent Carter Carburetor Site. The sampling showed no vapor intrusion or chemical contamination under the Boys & Girls Club building.
