EPA PROPOSES TO REVOKE 871 TOLERANCES FOR PESTICIDE RESIDUES
ON FOOD FROM PRIOR CANCELED USES
EPA has issued two Federal Register notices that propose to revoke 871 “tolerances” or maximum residue limits for pesticides on food products. One proposal, issued Jan. 21, 1998, includes 416 tolerances that are no longer applicable because the Agency has already canceled the active ingredients associated with the tolerances. The second proposal, issued Feb. 4, 1998, proposes revocation of 455 tolerances. The Agency had previously canceled these specific food uses, but other uses for these active ingredients remain in effect. These uses were canceled for a variety of reasons, including the lack of data to ensure they meet current health and safety standards. These notices provide a final opportunity for anyone who wants to continue to support any of these tolerances for import purposes to come forward and provide the appropriate data. Comments on these proposals must be submitted within 60 days of their publication in the Federal Register. EPA will revoke these tolerances unless someone commits to support their retention and demonstrates that the tolerance will meet new safety standards established under the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA). If EPA receives a request to support a tolerance, the Agency will publish a notice regarding data that must be submitted for review.
