(San Francisco)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced it will hold a public meeting to discuss the proposed location of the thermal destruction facility planned for the Operating Industries Inc. Superfund site, Monterey Park, Calif.
"U.S. EPA wants to hear from the community before we make a decision on the location of the facility," said Keith Takata, deputy director of U.S. EPA's hazardous waste division. "The most important consideration in selecting a location is protecting the health and safety of the surrounding communities."
The public is invited to attend a community meeting which will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, 1996, at the Schurr High School Cafeteria, 820 N. Wilcox Avenue, Montebello, Calif.,
The facility will be used to treat and destroy landfill gas produced at the site and will replace the old flares currently in use. The facility will also recover energy from the landfill gas.
U.S. EPA has evaluated numerous possible locations for the facility and is working closely with the cities of Monterey Park and Montebello and neighboring businesses in considering factors that affect the selection.
