Learn how to Improve Community Housing Conditions and Resultant Health Problems with Free EPA-Sponsored Training on April 26 in Chester, Pa.

PHILADELPHIA (March 25, 2013) - Attention community health workers, health educators and nurse practitioners.

"Healthy Homes for Community Health Workers," a free, one-day training course sponsored by EPA will be held on Friday, April 26th at Crozer - Chester Medical Center, in Upland, Pa. The class is open to community health workers, health educators, public health nurses, cooperative extension agents and others who work in healthy homes programs or community health.

Healthy housing is receiving considerable attention from public health professionals and policy makers as a result of emerging scientific evidence that links health issues such as asthma, lead poisoning, and unintentional injuries to substandard housing.

This course will provide the information and tools needed to teach community residents and clients how to makes sure their homes are healthy and safe so that associated health problems will be reduced. The course will provide one-on-one and large group education on healthy homes, provide general advice about specific problems, and be able to recommend techniques and approaches to be taken by families, landlords and other community members.

The course will cover:

    · Housing conditions and health problems
    · Populations that may be at higher risk for housing-related disease and injury
    · Developing a toolkit for attendees to share the training on a one-on-one basis or in a group setting

This course is taught by the National Center for Healthy Housing, and is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry Region 3, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Crozer – Keystone Health System.

Crozer-Chester Medical Center is located at 1 Medical Center Blvd, Upland, PA 19013.
