PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking an $80,000 penalty against Waytec Electronics Corp. for alleged Clean Water Act violations at the company’s circuit board manufacturing plant, located on McConville Road in Lynchburg, Va.
Waytec is a significant industrial user of the City of Lynchburg’s municipal wastewater treatment plant, discharging more than 25,000 gallons of industrial process water each day to the publicly owned treatment facility. Under the Clean Water Act, industrial users of public wastewater treatment plants must obtain pretreatment permits to limit the level of certain pollutants discharged to the plants. These limits are designed to avoid overburdening the capacity of public treatment plants.
According to EPA’s administrative complaint, Waytec violated limits on copper discharges in its industrial user pretreatment permit. Specifically, EPA alleges that on numerous occasions, Waytec violated the 4.5 milligram per liter (mg/l) daily maximum limit and the 2.7 mg/l weekly average limit for copper wastewater discharges.
The company has the right to a hearing to contest the alleged violations and proposed penalty.
