(9/26/06) What are estuaries and why are they important? Find out this Friday when EPA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) present "EstuaryLive 2006." It's a guided, real-time, virtual field trip on the Internet to four estuaries across the country.

Estuaries go by many names: bays, sounds, harbors, lagoons and sloughs -- places where rivers meet the sea. Some will be featured in this hour-long, interactive presentation. Guided by naturalists from the EPA's National Estuary Program (NEP) and NOAA's National Estuarine Research Reserve, viewers will:

  • learn about aerial photography kites to get a bird's eye view of a restored salt marsh
  • explore eelgrass beds and tidal wetlands
  • examine the relationship between Coho salmon and Dungeness crabs
  • see how research is conducted using the scientific method
  • learn about habitat restoration, water chemistry, and sediment transport

EstuaryLive, sponsored by EPA and NOAA, will bring estuaries into classrooms. Students will see interesting organisms and habitats and can submit questions to field trip leaders throughout the program. Questions will be answered live during the webcast. While targeted to students, all viewers are welcome.

This year, participants will take guided tours though New York-New Jersey Harbor, Peconic Bay on Long Island New York, South Slough and Tillamook Bay in Oregon, and Padilla Bay in Washington.
