Cleanup Status
Note: The EPA is the lead agency for managing cleanups at this facility.
On August 25, 2005, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) and PADEP's consultants conducted a site visit. The visit consisted of a site tour, and information gathering to assess the current status of the facility.
In September 2009, EPA determined that no unacceptable human exposure to contamination and migration groundwater contamination caused were under control.
Also in September 2009, the facility have completed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) corrective action requirements and a Statement of Basis, has been completed and a public notice has been issued by EPA. The Agency has determined, based on available information, that there are no unaddressed releases of hazardous waste or hazardous constituents from the facility. Therefore, no further investigation or remediation is required.
Cleanup Actions or environmental indicators characterizing the entire facility are shown below. It is not intended as an extensive list of milestones/activities. This listing, and all the data on this page, come from EPA’s RCRAInfo and are refreshed nightly to this page. For this table and the Cleanup Activities Pertaining to a Portion of the Facility table that follows, a blank in the Status column could mean the action either has not occurred or has not been reported in RCRAInfo.

The Metso facility is located at 240 Arch Street, York, York County, Pennsylvania. This site is located in a residential and light industrial area.
Operations began at the facility in 1965 under Koppers Company. With a change in ownership, Koppers Company, Mineral Processing Systems Division submitted a name change to Mineral Processing Systems, Inc. in a letter to Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), dated December 5, 1984. In 1992 an ownership and name change of Mineral Processing Systems, Inc. to Svedala Industries, Inc, took place. The company was also referred to as Allis Mineral Systems, a division of Svedala Industries, Inc. At an unknown date Svedala Industries, Inc. sold Allis Mineral Systems to Metso Minerals Industries, Inc., the current owner.
A Notification of Hazardous Waste Activity was completed by Koppers Company, Inc. on August 8, 1980. Waste codes F001, F002, F003, F005, and F017 were listed on the Notification form. A hand written note indicated that some of the waste streams were added on March 12, 1985.
Koppers Company, Inc. submitted the USEPA application for a Hazardous Waste Permit for the facility (Minerals Processing Systems Division, York, PA) in a letter dated November 18, 1980. Process Design Capacity for S01 (5,000 gallons), S02 (600 gallons), S02 (275 gallons) and T03 (20 gallons) were identified on the USEPA Hazardous Waste Permit application.
Contaminants at this Facility
EPA has determined that its proposed decision for the Facility is protective of human health and the environment and that no further corrective action or controls are necessary at this time.
Institutional and Engineering Controls at this Facility
Institutional controls were no required for the Facility.
Institutional and Engineering Controls help ensure human exposure and groundwater migration are under control at a cleanup facility. Where control types have been reported by states and EPA in EPA’s RCRAInfo, they are shown below. Not all control types are needed at all facilities, and some facilities do not require any controls. Where there are blanks, the control types may not be needed, may not be in place, or may not be reported in RCRAInfo.
