The facility is currently the York Business Center (YBS). It is a warehouse and distribution center.
Caterpillar, Incorporated once operated as a Precision Barstock Products manufacturer. The manufacturing facility included two primary buildings located in the central portion of the facility. These two buildings accounted for approximately 34 acres. Numerous other buildings were located throughout the site. As a manufacturing facility, Caterpillar produced an assortment of component parts for Caterpillar tractors, which were assembled in various facilities around the world. The initial manufacturing plant (Building B) began operation in 1953.
Contaminants at this Facility
Historically, Caterpillar has experienced documented and undocumented releases of machining oil, lubricating oil, kerosene, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the groundwater as a result of various manufacturing processes. Quarterly groundwater monitoring was documented from 1993 to 1996 in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) files. Since then , PADEP Act 2 Statewide Health Standards for VOCs, P AHs, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) and metals in groundwater have been attained at the site compliance point, the downgradient property line. The report also indicates that although specific areas of residual contamination do exist within the site boundary, they will not migrate to the site compliance point at concentrations exceeding statewide health standards.
