Cleanup Status
The Facility is an active hazardous waste storage facility operating under a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Permit for Hazardous Waste Storage and Treatment No. PAD981736143 issued June 2, 2004. That permit subjects the Facility to closure requirements for the currently operating hazardous waste container storage areas and tanks to address any unknown or possible future releases. The 2.4-acre service center was designed to facilitate the handling (accumulation) and storage of the wastes (transfer station) resulting from the services offered by Safety-Kleen. The services include parts cleaner waste (mineral spirits and immersion cleaner), dry cleaner waste (filter cartridges, powder residue, and still bottoms), and paint waste (thinners and paints) collection/recovery.
EPA and Michael J. Baker Inc. visited the Facility on November 13,2013, as part of the Environmental Indicator (EI) process and to document the findings of the releases described above. Based upon this Facility visit and information in the EI Inspection Report, EPA considers the spills and releases to have been remediated appropriately and protection of human health and the environment to have been achieved.
On September 29,2014, the EPA has determined, based on available information, that there are no unaddressed releases of hazardous waste or hazardous constituents from the facility. Therefore, no further investigation or remediation is required.
Cleanup Actions or environmental indicators characterizing the entire facility are shown below. It is not intended as an extensive list of milestones/activities. This listing, and all the data on this page, come from EPA’s RCRAInfo and are refreshed nightly to this page. For this table and the Cleanup Activities Pertaining to a Portion of the Facility table that follows, a blank in the Status column could mean the action either has not occurred or has not been reported in RCRAInfo.

The Facility is located in the Johnstown Industrial Park. The area is zoned for light industrial use. North and west of the property are large warehouse facilities. Immediately north, east and south of the facility is open and wooded land.
Property for the Facility was purchased on December 23, 1986 from Richland Township . This service center replaced the Safety-Kleen service center formerly located in Stoystown, Pennsylvania, and serves customers in the same geographic region. Safety-Kleen moved their Stoystown operations to Johnstown on April 23, 1988.
Contaminants at this Facility
No contaminants above levels of concern exist at the facility.
Institutional and Engineering Controls at this Facility
Institutional Controls were not required at the facility.
Institutional and Engineering Controls help ensure human exposure and groundwater migration are under control at a cleanup facility. Where control types have been reported by states and EPA in EPA’s RCRAInfo, they are shown below. Not all control types are needed at all facilities, and some facilities do not require any controls. Where there are blanks, the control types may not be needed, may not be in place, or may not be reported in RCRAInfo.
