Public Notice: DePue Site Five Year Review
Summary
EPA often divides large, complex sites like the DePue/New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Corp. site into smaller sections, called Operable Units. EPA will review cleanup actions conducted at two such sections: the site’s South Ditch (known as Operable Unit, or OU1), and off-site soils (known as OU4). Cleanup at these sections has included:
OU1 – South Ditch
- Removing sediments contaminated with metals and other unnatural sediments.
- Dewatering, stabilization, and placement of the contaminated sediments into a containment cell.
- Constructing a solid waste cap over the containment cell.
- Ongoing monitoring and maintenance of the containment cell and groundwater.
OU4 – Off-Site Soils
- Excavating metal-contaminated soils above remedial goals from residential properties.
- Restoring vegetation on residential properties using clean soils.
- Stockpiling and managing contaminated soils at OU3 – Former Plant Site Area.
