Selected Application Summary
The selected application will implement priority greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction projects focused on commercial and residential buildings. Under this project, the applicant will install solar panels and electric heat pumps in Tribal buildings and residences to lower electricity and heating costs, reduce wood burning and propane consumption, and add cooling to protect vulnerable populations from heat events. The selected application will provide incentives to Tribal members to encourage the installation of heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and weatherization measures.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Reduce propane consumption by 40,000 gallons/year at the Tribe’s Public Safety building through the installation of heat pump systems.
- Install a total of 661 kilowatts of solar capacity at four Tribal buildings.
- Install solar panels and heat pumps on roughly 30 Tribal homes to lower heating and electricity costs, reduce the use of wood and propane stoves, and improve indoor and outdoor air quality.
- Create a sustainable model and resources to enable the Tribe to integrate GHG reductions and clean energy transition into future government planning and community actions.
Activities and benefits summarized above reflect the measures in Nisqually Indian Tribe’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (0.9 MB).
