Selected Application Summary
The selected application will fund Phase 1 of the construction of a distributed community microgrid in the Passamaquoddy Tribe Indian Township, which is a critical part of the Tribe’s strategic 20-year plan for complete energy independence and carbon neutrality. Under the project, the applicant will conduct site visits, develop project designs, and install solar photovoltaic systems with battery backup and load management at residential and municipal buildings. The selected application will serve as a unique prototype for the development, construction, and operation of distributed microgrids that can be expanded at the Passamaquoddy Tribe Indian Township and replicated elsewhere through a case-study model.

Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Install solar photovoltaic systems with whole-home battery backup and load management at 202 single-family homes and 2 multi-family units.
- Develop grid-tied photovoltaic systems at two municipal buildings, the Tribal health center and government office.
- Generate approximately 1,938 megawatt hours of renewable energy per year through 4,559 photovoltaic panels with 2,808 kilowatt hours of energy storage system capacity.
- Improve resilience to increased and prolonged grid outages and grid instability.
- Provide significant cost savings with the reduction of electric bills.
- Implement a workforce training and development program to provide career opportunities across all levels of the energy sector, including design, planning, installation, and data analysis.
