Selected Application Summary
The selected application will implement greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) through fleet vehicle electrification, installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, facilitation of home energy assessments, implementation of a land buy-back program, assisting in the construction of a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant, and improvements to soil management. The selected project’s funds will be used to establish a voucher program to incentivize the adoption of electric- and battery-powered garden equipment, as well as a large-scale tree planting program to enhance air quality and carbon sequestration. Implementation of SRPMIC’s cross sector measures will mitigate methane emissions and foster sustainability and community resilience.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Replace 64 on-road fleet vehicles and 26 non-road fleet vehicles with EVs and install 16 EV chargers.
- Conduct comprehensive energy audits at select buildings across a total of 483,000 square feet and facilitate home energy assessments of residents’ homes in a financially disadvantaged area.
- Replace 264 gas-powered mowers and handheld garden equipment with electric- and battery-powered alternatives coupled with an outreach campaign to promote the benefits of using non-fossil-fuel emitting equipment.
- Install solar photovoltaic parking canopies to generate an estimated 616,213 kilowatt-hours annually and combat the urban heat island effect.
- Help build an RNG plant that will deliver converted landfill gas into an existing natural gas pipeline to be piped off-Reservation and reused, providing a transformative opportunity to reduce methane emissions and promote renewable energy generation.
- Plant 3,000 native trees on Tribally owned land to create carbon sinks and enhance air quality.
