Selected Application Summary
The selected application will fund the transformation of siting renewable energy projects and decarbonize the electricity sector while unlocking the deep decarbonization potential across other sectors of Michigan’s economy. Under the grant, the applicant will accelerate the siting, zoning, and permitting of renewable energy through the creation of the Renewables Ready Communities Program to facilitate the implementation needed to reach a goal of 60% renewable energy by 2030 in Michigan. The grant will also create the Brownfields Renewable Energy Pilot Program to incentivize renewable energy projects on brownfield sites.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce greenhouse gases and support communities 1:
- Provide incentives for local government agencies to encourage siting and permitting for renewable power projects, including 16,475 megawatts of wind and solar and 743 megawatts of energy storage.
- Expand Michigan’s Renewable Energy Academy to develop technical assistance materials for low-income and disadvantaged communities and for the Brownfield Renewable Energy Pilot Program.
- Invest at least $10 million in incentives for projects in Tribal communities.
- Development of workforce programs that offer job opportunities for residents in rural areas and increase community awareness and support for the projects.
- Leverage financial incentives to provide local governments with additional revenue per megawatt of renewable energy or energy storage installed to spend in their communities.
Activities in the selected application reflect measures in Michigan’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (2.7 MB).
⚑ The emission reduction estimates, as well as the descriptions of measures and benefits, were summarized from information provided by the applicant. These estimates, along with the award amount, are subject to change.
EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of July 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
