Selected Application Summary
The selected application will enhance energy efficiency and lower heating expenses for Tribal households, commercial facilities, and buildings in Nome, Alaska—one of the coldest inhabited places in the United States—through a combination of education and targeted upgrades. These upgrades will encompass weatherization, the installation of Heat Recovery Ventilation heat pumps, advanced SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) meters, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, improved heating boilers, and the addition of solar panels and battery storage. By implementing these measures, the project aims to reduce home heating costs, alleviate energy burdens on a low-income and disadvantaged community, and mitigate harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Reduce electricity use at a Tribal community center by approximately 1,610 kilowatt-hours annually to lower energy burdens and reduce utility costs.
- Decrease oil consumption at a Tribal community center by an estimated 1,081 gallons annually to decrease reliance on fossil fuels and reduce hazardous air pollutant emissions.
- Install 60-75 SMART meters on residential homes and at least 5 Tribal government buildings with installation of heat pumps, renewable energy, and necessary retrofits.
- Enhance the public health and wellbeing in the Tribal community by reducing emissions of harmful pollutants that degrade air quality.
- Increase high-quality jobs and access to workforce development training.
- Create an education program to familiarize the community with the project and provide information about the clean energy industry.
Activities and benefits summarized above reflect the measures in Village of Solomon's Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (5.3 MB).
