LMOP National Map
Landfill Gas (LFG) Energy Projects and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfills
LMOP’s National Map is a visual tool that accompanies the LMOP database of landfills in the United States and associated energy projects.
The map below incorporates Tribal lands and environmental justice (EJ) demographic data, which can be viewed when zoomed in to the state level. LMOP is displaying these data so that anyone can identify areas where LFG energy projects may warrant additional consideration, analysis or outreach to surrounding communities. LMOP provides instructions for how the map could be used to help consider potential EJ concerns during LFG energy project planning and development.
See below for additional information on data sources.
Information in the LMOP database is compiled from a variety of sources by voluntary submittal, is updated periodically and can change. LMOP cannot guarantee the validity of the data.

LMOP Database - Projects | LMOP LFG energy projects. The LMOP database tracks operational, under-construction, planned and shutdown energy projects at MSW landfills. It also identifies landfills that may be candidates for new LFG energy projects. If you have updates to the project data, please contact LMOP. |

LMOP Database - Landfills |
LMOP MSW landfills. The LMOP database is not an exhaustive national inventory of MSW landfills and is not purported to list every MSW landfill in the country. If you have updates to the landfill data, please contact LMOP. |

EJScreen |
The Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping Tool (EJScreen) can be a preliminary screening step when considering EJ in certain situations. LMOP displays these data so that users can identify areas where LFG energy projects may warrant additional consideration, analysis or outreach that may affect communities. The above LMOP map includes seven demographic indicators as well as two demographic indexes from EJScreen. The Demographic Index is based on the average of two of the indicators: low-income and people of color. The Supplemental Demographic Index is based on the average of four of the demographic indicators (low-income, unemployment rate, limited English speaking and less than high school education) and one health dataset factor for low life expectancy. LMOP displays these nine options on the map. Each indicator or index is displayed as a national percentile. For a place at the 80th percentile nationwide, that means 20 percent of the U.S. population has a higher value. If a user would like to incorporate state percentiles to see how a locality compares to other communities in that state, they can visit the EJScreen website. To see the EJScreen layers, zoom into an area of the map at the state level or closer. |

Tribal Land Data | EPA Tribal land data are displayed as ten data layer options in the LMOP map. Some are area layers while others (Alaska Native Villages, Virginia Federally Recognized tribes) are point locations. LMOP displays these data to show the proximity of Tribal land areas to LFG energy projects and MSW landfills. | Varies. See metadata for each layer at link provided. |
