Why were only 65 non-residential samples taken during the Round 2 2020 sampling activities?
The screening-level assessments used in the Superfund site assessment process are limited in scope and intended to collect the necessary information required to determine eligibility for placement on the NPL. These assessments are not intended to fully characterize the nature and extent of potential contamination associated with a site. The non-residential Norwood Landfill Site Inspection of 2017 included 48 soil, surface water, and sediment samples. The non-residential sampling of the 2020 Expanded Site Inspection included 71 sample locations (plus a select number duplicate samples for quality assurance) - a correction to the 65 quoted in the presentation). A large percentage of samples collected from these locations were from areas that EPA believed to have the highest likelihood of containing hazardous substances attributable to solid waste disposal. Samples collected from each location underwent separate analyses for volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, inorganic metals, pesticides, and poly-chlorinated biphenyls.
