Section 7: What other label areas require special attention?
- Determine appropriate language for the four parts of a storage and disposal statement.
- Find resources for determining storage and disposal language.
- Identify inappropriate warranty statement language.
- Describe what is included in the ingredient statement.
Storage and Disposal Statements
Labels for pesticide products are required to bear instructions for the storage, residue removal, and disposal of pesticides and pesticide containers. Storage and disposal statements are required to include four parts:
1. General storage and disposal statement
All products, except for residential/household-use products, must bear the following statement:
“Do not contaminate water, food, or feed by storage and disposal.”
2. Pesticide storage statement
There are two types of pesticide storage statements:
- Chemical-specific storage statements: These products contain active ingredients for which storage instructions have been provided by EPA. Refer to Table 1 in Chapter 13, Section IV of the Label Review Manual to determine appropriate language.
- Non-chemical-specific storage statements: These products contain active ingredients for which storage instructions have not been provided by EPA. Refer to Chapter 13, Section IV.B of the Label Review Manual for a list of factors to consider in determining appropriate language.
Additional guidance on pesticide storage can be found in Chapter 13, Section IV.C of the Label Review Manual, on state extension Web sites, and on state and federal agency and industry association Web sites.
3. Pesticide disposal statement
Pesticide disposal instructions include information on how to dispose of leftover pesticide products. Pesticide disposal and container handling statements are generally specific to the uses of the product contained and the type of container itself. Chapter 13 of the Label Review Manual provides guidance for determining language on:
- Residential use products.
- Hazardous waste or highly toxic products.
- All other products (products labeled for all uses other than household or residential uses and for which pesticide disposal or container handlings statements have not been specifically identified by EPA).
