Public Notice: Charlevoix Municipal Well Site Summer 2024 Activities
Summary
Charlevoix Municipal Well Field Summer 2024
Design Plans Complete
The design plans for the demolition and soil excavation work at some properties with heavily contaminated soil are complete. The work is being planned for later this year. To learn more about excavation, read Community Guide to Excavation of Contaminated Waste (pdf) (2 pp, 628 KB)
Pilot Testing
EPA plans to complete the second part of pilot testing at at Upright and State Friday morning (8/9). We will return Tuesday, Aug. 13, to complete the pilot testing for air sparging/soil vapor extraction and in-situ chemical oxidation to clean up soil and groundwater at Antrim and State. Area residents may see construction workers and heavy equipment during pilot testing operations. Residents close to the worksites may notice some noise and ground vibrations. All work will be conducted during normal business hours.
What is air sparging/soil vapor extraction?
Air sparging/soil vapor extraction involves the injection of air below ground to remove and break down contaminants. To learn more about the process, read Community Guide to Soil Vapor Extraction and Air Sparging (pdf) (2 pp, 1,033 KB).
What is chemical oxidation?
Chemical oxidation uses chemicals called oxidants to help break down harmful contaminants into less toxic ones. It is commonly described as “in situ” because it is conducted in place, without having to excavate soil or pump out groundwater for aboveground cleanup. To learn more about excavation, read Community Guide to Excavation of Contaminated Waste (pdf) (2 pp, 628 KB)
