Public Notice: Proposed Closure Plan for Hazardous Waste Tank at Eareckson Air Station in Alaska
Summary
EPA is requesting public comments on a proposed closure plan for hazardous waste Tank 110-D1 at Eareckson Air Station, Shemya Island, Alaska.
The closure of unpermitted hazardous waste management units is required under the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). EPA is required to review and approve all closure plans, including holding a 30-day public comment period. These reviews help ensure that the closure effectively protects people’s health and the environment.
EPA determined that Tank 110-D1 was storing hazardous waste without a RCRA storage permit, and issued a compliance order to the U.S. Air Force in 2022 to close the tank in accordance with RCRA requirements.
After several revisions, EPA has determined that the draft closure plan submitted by the Air Force meets RCRA's closure requirements. A copy is available for review below (see "Related Documents").
After the public comment period, EPA will consider and respond to all comments and either approve the plan, approve the plan with modifications, or require further revisions.
