EPA Awards Nearly $500,000 to Student Teams to Develop Environmental Technologies (September 2024)
Today, September 20, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $498,801 in research funding to five college teams to further develop their innovative technologies to help address urgent environmental and public health challenges. Winning projects address high priority issues such as developing PFAS-free alternatives and ensuring cleaner water by reducing lead, microplastics and nutrient runoff.

EPA Awards $1M in Research Funding to Implement Drinking Water Treatment for Manganese in Small Communities (September 2024)
On September 13, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $1,000,000 in research grant funding to Cornwell Research Group in Newport News, Virginia, to evaluate the effectiveness of common manganese treatment technologies. This will provide states, Tribes and small utilities with an improved ability to adopt and implement these treatment technologies in small drinking water systems.
EPA Awards $15 Million for Research on PFAS Exposure and Reduction in Agriculture (September 2024)
On September 4, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced over $15 million in research grant funding to ten institutions for research to reduce per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances exposure from food and protect our farmlands and farming communities. These community-engaged research projects will collect PFAS bioaccumulation data in agricultural plants and livestock and explore strategies for reducing PFAS exposure, which are important parts of EPA’s commitment to protecting human health and the environment from PFAS.
EPA Awards Nearly $1.5 Million to Clarkson University to Develop and Demonstrate Technology to Detect and Degrade PFAS (August 2024)
On August 27, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is announcing $1,499,979 in research funding to Clarkson University to develop and demonstrate nanosensor technology to detect, monitor and degrade PFAS in groundwater and surface water that may be used as drinking water sources.
EPA Awards $9M in Research Grants to Address Knowledge Gaps in Antimicrobial Resistance (August 2024)
On August 20, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $9 million in grant funding to four institutions for research to address knowledge gaps and better identify and manage antimicrobial resistance risk. Antimicrobial resistance is a major public health concern and can make it harder to treat certain infections in animals and people. Wastewater treatment facilities are potential receptors and sources for antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes.
EPA Awards Nearly $2.2M to Small Businesses to Advance Innovative Environmental Technologies (December 2023)
On December 19, 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $2,198,867 in research funding to 22 small businesses to develop technologies that will help protect human health and the environment. The 22 small businesses will use EPA funding to develop their novel projects, including an AI-based mapping tool to support first responders during disasters, a reactor to remove PFAS from sewage waste, and a self-cleaning indoor air purification system for use during wildfires.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced nearly $2 million in research funding to the University of California, Berkeley to develop a cost-benefit tool to support enhanced aquifer recharge (EAR) as a viable, safe, and cost-effective water management strategy. EAR is the practice of using excess surface water to intentionally replenish and supplement existing groundwater supplies for storage and potential reuse.
