American Cleaning Institute, Washington, DC
American Cleaning Institute (ACI) is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Supporter. ACI is a trade organization that represents the U.S. cleaning product supply chain. In 2021, ACI-hosted events that included information on Safer Choice reached over 1,100 viewers and registrants. Throughout 2021, ACI amplified Safer Choice messaging across social media, which was seen by more than 4,000 people. ACI also secured 25 articles that featured Safer Choice, reaching close to 1.4 million individuals. To help consumers make informed decisions when choosing cleaning products, ACI developed a cleaning product certification guide that features the Safer Choice label and explains what the certification means. The certification guide was promoted to ACI members in two newsletters. Safer Choice commends ACI for its dedication to supporting the Safer Choice program.
The Ashkin Group, LLC, Channel Islands Harbor, CA
The Ashkin Group, LLC is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Supporter. In 2021, The Ashkin Group trained 15,000 frontline cleaning workers on the benefits of cleaning with products containing safer ingredients, such as those certified by Safer Choice. The group has trained over 45,000 workers, the majority of whom are from disadvantaged communities which supports EPA’s focus on environmental justice. The Ashkin Group added new recommendations to its training to help workers reduce energy use, water use and waste, both on the job and in their homes. The training also focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting EPA’s goal of addressing climate change. The Ashkin Group also referenced Safer Choice in key building certification programs to encourage procurement of certified cleaning products, including the U.S. Green Building Council’s update to its LEED v4.1Rating System and the International WELL Building Institute’s WELL Rating System. Additionally, The Ashkin Group recommended the Safer Choice program in dozens of articles and webinars throughout 2021. Safer Choice commends The Ashkin Group for its commitment to educating and protecting frontline cleaning workers.
Bona US, Englewood, CO
Bona US is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Bona US has been a Safer Choice partner since 2020 and Safer Choice certification is a companywide objective. Bona US added seven new Safer Choice-certified products to its product line in 2021, with 100% of its certified products proudly displaying the Safer Choice label. Bona US raised awareness about the Safer Choice program with multiple social media posts and a multilingual Safer Choice portal on their website to further educate its customers on what it means to be Safer Choice certified. In 2021, Bona US participated in a “Safer Choice Certified At-Home Cleaning” broadcast media tour, which aired more than 1,100 times on TV, radio and internet outlets, reaching more than 738.5 million viewers and listeners. Safer Choice applauds Bona US for their commitment to the Safer Choice program and for educating consumers about what it means to be Safer Choice certified.
Case Medical, Bloomfield, NJ
Case Medical is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Case Medical has been a Safer Choice partner since 2011. Case Medical displays the Safer Choice label on its product containers and packaging, marketing materials, catalogs, literature and website. Case Medical highlights Safer Choice throughout its website like on the homepage and a blog post. Case Medical includes Safer Choice messaging in email blasts and regularly published articles. In 2021, Case Medical hosted monthly webinars encouraging the use of Safer Choice-certified products by consumers and in the healthcare industry. These webinars also educated the healthcare community on cleaning best practices, safety and sustainability. Case Medical uses the Safer Chemical Ingredients List (SCIL) and GreenBlue’s CleanGredients when formulating new products. Case Medical’s Safer Choice-certified product offering includes concentrated formulas which reduce water consumption and plastic use. These products also lower greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the amount of product that must be transported. This supports EPA’s goal of addressing climate change. Case Medical promotes environmental justice by limiting the environmental impact of their manufacturing facility, which is located in a lower-income residential neighborhood. Case Medical takes responsibility for the safety of their workers and neighbors by using technologies to reduce air and water pollution, filtering and recycling wastewater, creating greenspace adjacent to their facility and reducing energy consumption. Safer Choice commends Case Medical for their promotion of the Safer Choice label and commitment to protecting worker and community health.
Church & Dwight Co., Inc., Ewing, NJ
Church & Dwight Co., Inc. (CHD) is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. CHD has been a Safer Choice partner since 2015. In 2021, CHD prominently displayed the Safer Choice label on its Safer Choice-certified laundry detergent and in its marketing materials. CHD features Safer Choice messaging on its website, as well as in its social media and national TV and print advertisements. CHD’s marketing campaign leveraged social media channels that reach about 700 million individuals. CHD also expanded its Safer Choice-certified product line in 2021 and made its Safer Choice-certified product line more accessible to lower income shoppers by offering affordable prices and making these products available at retailers that often serve low-income communities. These efforts support EPA’s goal of advancing environmental justice. CHD’s produces its product line using 100% renewable energy, contributing to EPA’s goal of addressing climate change. Safer Choice applauds CHD for its environmental stewardship and efforts to increase consumer awareness of the Safer Choice label.
Clean Safety & Health in Food Trucks (CleanSHiFT) Team, Seattle, WA
The Clean Safety & Health in Food Trucks (CleanSHiFT) team is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Supporter. In 2021, the CleanSHiFT team developed tools and educational materials to promote safer cleaning techniques and products in food trucks in Washington State, many of which are owned and operated by immigrant entrepreneurs. Through a collaboration of the University of Washington, the Washington State Food Truck Association, Heritage University, PopUPjustice, and the Washington State Department of Ecology, the CleanSHiFT team conducted a survey in English and Spanish of 49 food truck operators. They used the results to develop a bilingual online toolkit that includes six steps for safer cleaning to improve air quality and reduce respiratory hazards, a storytelling instructional video highlighting the selection of Safer Choice-certified products, and a fact sheet on cleaning and disinfecting. The toolkit also features a bumper sticker that can be shared with customers to access information on safer cleaning products, including Safer Choice-certified products. The CleanSHiFT team hosted several webinars and talks to promote the toolkit. This work was sponsored by a University of Washington EarthLab Innovation Grant and supports EPA’s focus on environmental justice. Safer Choice commends the CleanSHiFT team for its work to educate and protect food truck operators.
The Clorox Company, Oakland, CA
The Clorox Company (Clorox) is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Clorox has been a Safer Choice partner since 2007. In 2021, Clorox had 14 retail and two industrial and institutional (I&I) Safer Choice-certified products. Clorox now displays the Safer Choice label on the front of all of its Safer Choice-certified products, representing a 150% increase in Clorox products featuring the Safer Choice label. In addition to placing the Safer Choice label on the front of its products, Clorox features the label on its website, printed collateral, print advertising, and cases displayed in stores. Clorox expanded its antimicrobial products that carry the DfE logo from one registration in 2021 to four registrations in 2022. Clorox reached 100% use of renewable energy in the U.S. and Canada in 2021, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 11% and virgin plastic and fiber packaging by 11%. Seventy-six percent of Clorox packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable. These achievements in reducing greenhouse gas emissions support EPA’s goal of addressing climate change. Safer Choice commends Clorox’s commitment to sustainability and to formulating products with safer ingredients.
Colgate-Palmolive, New York, NY
Colgate-Palmolive is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Palmolive became a Safer Choice partner in 2021. Its Safer Choice-certified products were reformulated to use only chemicals listed on the Safer Chemical Ingredient List (SCIL). Colgate-Palmolive promotes the Safer Choice program by placing the Safer Choice label on the front panel of its products. The company also developed a “Shopper Toolkit” in 2021, designed to help communicate Safer Choice messaging both online and in stores. With a vision to make efficacy and sustainability more affordable, Colgate-Palmolive’s Safer Choice-certified products were sold at a lower price point, making them accessible to retailers in markets that serve disadvantaged communities. This supports EPA’s focus on environmental justice. Colgate-Palmolive is also committed to addressing climate change, having reduced plastic waste by 5,200 tons by reducing the size of its bottles and using 100% post-consumer recycled and recyclable plastic bottles. Safer Choice commends Colgate-Palmolive’s dedication to formulating and promoting products with safer chemical ingredients.
Design for the Environment Logo Redesign Coalition: Environmental Defense Fund, The Natural Resources Defense Council, The Clorox Company, The Procter & Gamble Company, and Reckitt
The Design for the Environment Redesign Coalition, (The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), The Clorox Company (Clorox), The Procter and Gamble Company (P&G) and Reckitt), whose collaboration was aided by Klein Public Affairs, is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Supporter. This coalition of environmental organizations, manufacturers and marketers of antimicrobial and cleaning products worked together in 2021 to provide EPA suggestions on modernizing the Design for the Environment (DfE) logo. The original DfE logo did not appeal or effectively communicate to consumers, purchasers and retailers the meaning and benefits of products that carry the logo. The coalition asked EPA to develop a more modern logo that would push market forces to drive demand for antimicrobial products that meet the health, safety and performance standards of pesticides registered by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) as well as other rigorous criteria required by EPA. In addition to working with staff from EPA to update the logo, this coalition worked to educate individual states about the importance of the Safer Choice and DfE programs. The coalition spent much of 2021 working on the new DfE logo, including seeking input from product companies and retailers like Target and Home Depot. The new DfE logo was officially released in May of 2022. EPA applauds the work and dedication of the EDF, NRDC, Clorox, P&G and Reckitt coalition in support of the Safer Choice and DfE programs.
Dirty Labs Inc., Portland, OR
Dirty Labs is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Dirty Labs has been a Safer Choice partner since 2020. In 2021, the company increased its number of Safer Choice-certified products from two to five, with more products in development. In the fall of 2021, a national morning show featured Dirty Labs products and noted that its products are certified by Safer Choice. Dirty Labs features the Safer Choice label on its Safer Choice-certified products. Dirty Labs uses sustainable, 100% recyclable packaging for its products. The company’s laundry detergent is a concentrated formula and is packaged in recyclable aluminum bottles with aluminum caps. The reduction in fuel needed to transport the smaller concentrated formula products, combined with lower energy required to recycle aluminum, have resulted in lower carbon emissions, contributing to EPA’s goal of addressing climate change. Safer Choice applauds Dirty Labs for its work manufacturing products with safer chemical ingredients and its commitment to sustainable packaging.
ECOS, Cypress, CA
ECOS is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. ECOS has been a Safer Choice partner since 2008. In 2021, ECOS submitted a new product formula and made several updates to existing formulas. In 2021, Safer Choice certified products rose to 86% of ECOS product offerings, an increase of 7% over the previous year. In addition to displaying the Safer Choice label on its product labels, ECOS has included the label image on display trays, shipping boxes and on signage at its facilities. The importance of the Safer Choice program to ECOS’s brand and mission was emphasized at numerous conferences, webinars and podcasts throughout 2021. Also in 2021, ECOS added a Regulatory Compliance Specialist to its Regulatory team, with management of the Safer Choice partnership comprising a significant portion of the new team member’s responsibility. ECOS diverted over 740 tons of trash through a variety of waste reduction strategies in 2021, leading to a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and contributing to EPA’s goal of addressing climate change. Safer Choice commends ECOS’s dedication to producing products with safer chemical ingredients in a sustainable manner.
Grove Collaborative, San Francisco, CA
Grove Collaborative is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Grove Collaborative has been a Safer Choice partner since 2019. In 2021, the company added four new Safer Choice-certified products, all of which are cleaning concentrates sold in glass bottles. Grove displays the Safer Choice label on its products, as well as on product description pages on Grove.com in the Grove Collaborative Safer Choice Spotlight Store, which the company created in 2021. The Safer Choice Spotlight Store allows consumers to easily search Grove.com for Safer Choice-certified products. Grove’s celebrity brand ambassadors promoted Safer Choice-certified products in 2021, reaching a broad audience on social media platforms. A social media campaign, Plastic Free July, challenged consumers to avoid plastic and use products like the company’s Safer Choice-certified concentrated cleaning products. Grove’s dedication to reducing plastic waste contributes to EPA’s goal of addressing climate change. Safer Choice applauds Grove Collaborative’s commitment to sustainability and producing products with safer chemical ingredients.
The Hazardous Waste Management Program, Seattle, WA
The Hazardous Waste Management Program (Haz Waste Program), a coalition of local governments in King County, Washington, is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Supporter for the sixth year. In 2021, the Haz Waste Program continued its efforts to educate residents and businesses about identifying hazardous products and safer alternatives. The Haz Waste Program focuses its community outreach efforts in disadvantaged communities and works to bring equity into their programs, supporting EPA’s goal of addressing issues of environmental justice. The Haz Waste Program teaches residents how to read cleaning product labels and to look for safer cleaning products, such as those certified by Safer Choice. The coalition launched the Degreaser Pilot Project in 2021 to help protect workers, with forty businesses participating. This project supports small businesses switch to safer degreaser products and recommends Safer Choice-certified degreasers. The Haz Waste Program’s website provides information about safer products and the Safer Choice label and is available in 14 languages. Safer Choice applauds the Haz Waste Program’s dedication to educating their community about products with safer ingredients.
Holloway House, Inc., Fortville, IN
Holloway House, Inc. is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Holloway House has been a Safer Choice partner since 2008. In 2021, Holloway House added an additional product to its existing Safer Choice certified product list. Products with Safer Choice certification now account for 50% of Holloway House’s formulations. In early 2021, Holloway House updated its labels, making the Safer Choice label more prominent on both the front and back of each Safer Choice-certified product. In addition to promoting the Safer Choice program by featuring the label on products, Holloway House promoted the Safer Choice program during presentations to current and potential buyers. Holloway House products are sold at major retailers, and the company has expanded into e-commerce. Holloway House has worked to reduce its carbon footprint by participating in a cardboard recycling program, updating to LED lighting and using ingredients that are effective in cold water. These efforts to reduce waste and conserve energy support EPA’s goal of addressing climate change. Safer Choice commends Holloway House’s commitment to producing products with safer chemical ingredients.
The Home Depot, Atlanta, GA
The Home Depot is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Retailer. In 2021, The Home Depot relaunched their Eco Options website as Eco Actions to emphasize their commitment to the environment. Safer Choice-certified products are included as a subcategory within the Eco Actions Responsible Chemistry category. The Home Depot also increased its offerings of Safer Choice-certified products, from 173 products in 2020 to 185 in 2021. The Home Depot’s website features Safer Choice-certified products, many of which have labels on the front of the products, making the Safer Choice label visible to website users. The company also raises awareness of the Safer Choice label by displaying it on product lifestyle images and through in-store signage. This exposure reaches an estimated 21 million individuals per week. Safer Choice applauds The Home Depot’s dedication to selling products with safer chemical ingredients.
Household & Commercial Products Association, Washington, DC
The Household & Commercial Products Association (HCPA) is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Supporter. HCPA is a trade association representing companies that manufacture and sell products used for cleaning, protecting, maintaining and disinfecting in homes and commercial environments. HCPA’s member companies include 28 formulators of Safer Choice-certified products and 15 chemical manufacturers who produce ingredients on the Safer Chemicals Ingredients List (SCIL). HCPA increased the engagement of its members with the Safer Choice program in 2021 by making significant efforts to highlight the Safer Choice program in its communications, including a press release applauding the EPA for restoring and growing the Safer Choice program, as well as a social media post during National Cleaning Week encouraging the use of Safer Choice-certified products. HCPA also featured Safer Choice speakers at its Mid-Year and Annual 2021 meetings. Safer Choice commends HCPA’s support of the innovation of safer chemicals and manufacture of Safer Choice-certified products.
Jelmar, LLC, Skokie, IL
Jelmar, LLC is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Jelmar is a woman- and family-owned company and has been a Safer Choice partner since 2005. Eleven of Jelmar’s 20 product types are Safer Choice-certified. All of Jelmar’s Safer Choice-certified products display the Safer Choice label, and the label is also displayed on its website, and in sales, marketing, media and other materials. Jelmar’s Safer Choice certification is a main focal point within its communication strategy. In 2021, the company featured Safer Choice in its paid advertising, trade show materials, other media placements, owned social media and with its influencers. Together, these communication channels reached more than one billion people. In the past year, Jelmar built Jelmar University, which examines the EPA Safer Choice program and is part of the company’s formal onboarding process. Jelmar packages its products in 100% recyclable packaging and ensures that its packaging is free of heavy metals, BPA and phthalates. Safer Choice applauds Jelmar’s dedication to manufacturing products with safer chemicals and for its support and promotion of the Safer Choice program. Safer Choice also recognizes their significant achievement of being recognized as a Partner of the Year eight times.
Lemi Shine, Austin, TX
Lemi Shine is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Lemi Shine has been a Safer Choice partner since 2017. Eighteen out of Lemi Shine’s 21 products are Safer Choice certified. Lemi Shine introduced a new wipe disinfectant in 2021 that is effective against SARS-CoV-2 and is certified by the Design for the Environment (DfE) program. Lemi Shine uses social media as a primary outlet to advertise its Safer Choice-certified products. The company also promotes the use of Safer Choice-certified products on blogs about cleaning hacks on its website. Lemi Shine features Safer Choice-certified products prominently on a page on its website where ingredients for each of its products are listed. A major focus of Lemi Shine is to educate consumers about how products that are safer for human health and the environment can also be affordable and perform well. Safer Choice commends Lemi Shine’s dedication to formulating and manufacturing products with safer chemical ingredients.
LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, San Francisco, CA
LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired San Francisco (LightHouse) is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. LightHouse has been a Safer Choice partner since 2019. LightHouse employs and trains blind or visually impaired individuals in chemical manufacturing, customer service, shipping and receiving, inventory management, chemical blending, and quality control and assurance. All proceeds from sales of LightHouse products go directly back to providing services to people who are blind or visually impaired. In 2021, LightHouse was awarded a private label contract to produce eight Safer Choice-certified products to be sold nationwide. The organization also partners with the National Institute for the Blind to sell Safer Choice-certified products, with 10 of their 14 products carrying the Safer Choice label. Safer Choice applauds LightHouse’s work to support the blind and visually impaired community and to produce safer products.
Mother Africa, Kent, Washington
Mother Africa is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Supporter. Mother Africa’s mission is to support African refugee and immigrant women and their families. Mother Africa has partnered with the Hazardous Waste Program in King County, Washington for the last three years through a program that raises awareness about safer household cleaners. In 2021, Mother Africa made educational visits to 86 homes of immigrants from Africa and the Middle East and taught two virtual workshops. The organization teaches participants about safer cleaning product alternatives and practices, including the identification of the EPA Safer Choice label. During home visits, Mother Africa’s Safer Healthy Homes promoters presented information about safer cleaning products and practices, delivered a Safer Cleaning Kit, which included a Safer Choice-certified product, and distributed a French or Arabic version of Haz Waste’s “shopper’s card,” which shows ecolabels (including the Safer Choice label) that support safer purchases. Mother Africa’s work supports EPA’s goal of advancing environmental justice. Safer Choice applauds Mother Africa’s dedication to educating the immigrant and refugee community about safer cleaning products and practices.
Novozymes North America, Raleigh, NC
Novozymes is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Innovator. In 2021, Novozymes added six ingredients to CleanGredients, a database of chemical ingredients pre-approved for use in Safer Choice-certified products. Novozymes supported 12 requests made by formulators and brand owners for certification of formulations by the Safer Choice program. The company also ran a survey of 1,000 consumers in the United States to gather data on consumer perception of Safer Choice as the most trustworthy certification on laundry products. Novozymes provided this information to formulators to help them understand how Safer Choice certification enables commercial success. To build awareness of the Safer Choice program, Novozymes promoted the Safer Choice program and their Safer Choice-certified products on its website and social media channels. Novozymes showed its commitment to EPA’s goal of addressing climate change by working to reduce carbon emissions. Novozymes has also committed to ensuring zero waste by 2030. The company is well on its way to this goal, with a recycling rate of non-biomass waste at 62% in 2021, compared to 48% in 2020. Safer Choice commends Novozymes work to manufacture safer chemicals in a sustainable manner.
The ODP Corporation, Boca Raton, FL
The ODP Corporation (ODP), formerly Office Depot, is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Distributor. As part of ODP’s stewardship, the company supports the responsible use of chemicals. This commitment extends to all the products it sells, including private and other brands, the packaging for those products, and the manufacturing processes for those products. The company seeks to phase out chemicals of concern and improve the general management of chemicals. ODP has focused on green procurement and sales by providing products that are energy efficient, use recycled content, and certified by Safer Choice and other third-party ecolabels. ODP recently launched a new line of products that are Safer Choice-certified. These products are available as concentrates and can be filled in a reusable bottle, reducing waste. This supports EPA’s goal of addressing climate change. Safer Choice applauds ODP’s commitment to safer and sustainable products.
The Procter & Gamble Company, Cincinnati, OH
The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. P&G has been a Safer Choice partner since 2019. In 2021, a new group of P&G detergents, focusing on babies and young children, became Safer Choice-certified, bringing the total number of Safer Choice-certified P&G products to 24. These detergents contain simple, recognizable ingredients, making it easier for customers to make an informed choice. P&G clearly displays the Safer Choice label on its Safer Choice-certified products and in its advertisements and social media posts. Safer Choice commends P&G’s commitment to formulating and manufacturing products with safer chemical ingredients.
PurposeBuilt Brands, Gurnee, IL
PurposeBuilt Brands is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. PurposeBuilt Brands has been a Safer Choice partner since 2019. The company has 42 Safer Choice-certified products, and ships 2.1 million units of Safer Choice-certified products annually. In 2021, its Safer Choice-certified products increased by seven and the company reformulated 12 products. The company’s reformulation involved over 1,500 hours of work by three Research & Development Chemists. PurposeBuilt Brands features Safer Choice communication on its packaging labels, brand websites, online product listings and other retailer websites. PurposeBuilt Brands launched its Packaging Stewardship Policy in 2021, which addressed the effect of product packaging on the environment. In accordance with this policy, the company has worked to reduce bottle weight and its use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ultimately reducing plastic usage on some of its products by 9.5%. Sensitive Home is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Formulator-Product Manufacturer. Sensitive Home designs cleaners to be safer for people with chemical, skin, and respiratory sensitivities, and has been a Safer Choice partner since 2020. In 2021, Sensitive Home initiated 19 Safer Choice applications, six of which included concentrated spray products that would significantly reduce plastic distribution. In addition to its brick-and-mortar outlets, Sensitive Home products became available nationally in 2021 through a partnership with a major online retailer and with the launch of its online store. The Sensitive Home online store displays the EPA Safer Choice label on its homepage and on each individual product page. Sensitive Home also includes the Safer Choice label in its marketing insert, which is included in every order, as well as its media outreach efforts. Solutex, Sterling, VA
Solutex is recognized as an outstanding Safer Choice Distributor. In 2021, Solutex wrapped five of its delivery trucks and vans with high quality graphic film, prominently displaying its four Safer Choice Partner of the Year Award logos on one panel and one of its Safer Choice-certified products on a separate panel. A study conducted by the company that provided the graphic film found that one wrapped vehicle averages six million annual views. Solutex estimates that its five wrapped-delivery vehicles may have generated about 30 million views of the Safer Choice label and Safer Choice program last year. In 2021, Solutex purchased a cleaning supplies distributor, allowing the company to grow the sales of their Safer Choice-certified products by 20%. Solutex supplied Safer Choice-certified products to a housing provider for use in its 45 buildings located in disadvantaged communities. This work supports EPA’s focus on environmental justice.
