Lime Manufacturing NESHAP Proposed Risk and Technology Review
In August 2019, EPA proposed minor amendments to improve the effectiveness of the 2004 National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for Lime Manufacturing Plants. These affected facilities operate lime kilns to produce lime products from the calcination of limestone. Each facility potentially operates multiple individual lime kilns, lime coolers and process stone handling operations. EPA has evaluated the risks remaining after fully implementing the 2004 NESHAP and determined that risks from this source category are acceptable. In addition, the Agency identified no developments in practices, processes or control technologies that would further reduce emissions of hazardous air pollutants. EPA proposed minor amendments to clarify that the standards are applicable during periods of startup, shutdown and malfunction and require electronic reporting of data submissions.
