Getting Started – Corporate Climate Leadership
EPA’s Center for Corporate Climate Leadership serves as a resource center to help organizations of all sizes measure and manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Organizations can use the resource center’s technical tools, ground-tested guidance, and educational resources to inventory GHG emissions, set and achieve GHG emission reduction targets, understand climate-related financial risks and opportunities, and implement climate transition plans. The resource center was launched in 2012, and its resources have evolved since then to align with best practices around measuring and managing corporate GHG emissions.
Getting Started with Corporate GHG Management
Organizations are increasingly focused on climate-related disclosures that have become priorities for the public, investors, and regulators. The resource center offers tools, guidance and information that support organizations’ efforts towards addressing the four GHG elements that typically make up climate-related disclosures:
- Developing a GHG inventory to account for an organization’s scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3 emissions that are foundational to measure an organization’s GHG emissions, track their GHG emissions changes over time, and better-inform target setting and achievement strategy.
- Setting and achieving a GHG reduction target to establish an organization’s commitment to reducing emissions.
- Understanding and disclosing climate-related financial risks and opportunities that the organization has identified and assessed, and how they plan to or are managing climate-related risks (physical and transition) and opportunities.
- Developing a climate transition plan, where an organization describes its strategy to transition all its processes, operations, and business models within a specified timeframe towards meeting their climate-related targets.
Key Frameworks Driving Corporate Action
The GHG reporting and disclosing landscape is an evolving space where frameworks, regulations, policies, and guidance work together to help improve transparency and accelerate emissions reductions.

Why Corporate GHG Management is Important
Organizations play a key role in helping achieve the GHG emissions reductions that are needed nationally and globally. To rapidly achieve emissions reductions, all organizations, especially those in high-emitting sectors and emerging markets, must work to reduce their emissions corporate-wide. Organizations can use the resource center’s resources throughout their sustainability journey to help measure and manage GHG emissions.
