2020 Federal Green Challenge Award Winners in the Northeast Region
Recognition was an important part of the Federal Green Challenge (FGC). Awards were given in the categories of Electronics, Waste and Water in the Northeast region.
In Region 2, which serves New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and eight Tribal Nations, the 2020 regional award winners were the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab (PPPL); Brookhaven National Laboratories; US Army Reserve 99th Regional Support Command; Fort Buchanan; and 13 General Service Administration federal buildings located in New York and New Jersey. The award winners shared details about their diversion activities, and about their awards with EPA. Below are the stories they told behind their accomplishments.
Waste Diversion and Electronics
Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Caribbean Healthcare System, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Caribbean Healthcare System reused and recycled 65 tons of electronics and diverted 2,119 tons of waste or 52 percent from landfills.
Department of Energy, Princeton Plasma Physics Lab (PPPL), Princeton, N.J.
Plasma Physics Lab had 438 tons or 73 percent waste diversion from landfill and reused and recycled 2.53 tons of electronics.

Department of Energy, Brookhaven National Lab, Upton, N.Y.
Brookhaven National Laboratories (NY) reused and recycled 109.9 tons of electronics.
Waste
Department of Defense, US Army Reserve 99th Regional Support Command, Fort Dix, N.J.
Fort Dix diverted 2,967 tons of waste or 40 percent of their waste from landfills.
Department of Defense, Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico
Fort Buchanan (Puerto Rico) recycled and diverted 6,052 tons or 72 percent of their waste from landfills.
General Service Administration, Daniel Patrick Moynihan Court House, New York City, N.Y.
Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse diverted and recycled 369 tons of waste at a rate of 62 percent from landfills.
General Services Administration, Peter Rodino Federal Building Newark, N.J.
Peter Rodino Federal Building diverted and recycled 102 tons or 60 percent of the waste from landfills.

20 Washington Place diverted and recycled 41.2 tons or76.2 percent of the waste from landfills.

Leo O’Brien Federal Office Building diverted and recycled 49 tons or 47 percent of the waste from landfills.
General Services Administration, Brient Court House, White Plains, N.Y.
Brient Court House recycled 12.4 tons of waste at a 40 percent waste diversion rate from landfills.

General Service Administration, Ronald H. Brown US Mission (United Nation Plaza), New York City, N.Y.
Ronald H. Brown US Mission had water savings of 687,236 gallons or 17 percent water reduction and diverted 48.85 tons or 67.44 percent waste diversion from landfills.
General Service Administration, 26 Federal Plaza New York City, N.Y.
26 Federal Plaza reduced water consumption by 3.24 million gallons of water or 9.3 percent and diverted 372 tons or 64 percent of the waste from landfills.
General Service Administration, Martin Luther King, Jr, US Court House, Newark, N.J.
Martin Luther King Jr. US Courthouse recycled 610,000 gallons of water or 27 percent rate reduction while diverted/recycled 48 tons or 65 percent of the waste from landfills.

Federal Building 201 Varick Street saved 600,000 gallons of water or 8 percent reduction and diverted and/or recycled 96 tons or 73 percent of the waste from landfills.

Foley Court House reduced water consumption by 81,000 gallons or 14 percent and diverted 24 tons of waste or 32 percent from landfills.
General Services Administration, Hanley Federal Building, Syracuse, N.Y.
Hanley Federal Building diverted and recycled 21.51 Tons or 29 percent of waste from landfills, and reduced water consumption by 230,000 gallons of water or 14 percent.

Keating Federal Building diverted and recycled 11.5 Tons or 18 percent of the waste from landfills and reduced water consumption by 812,500.0 gallons or 26 percent.
