HAB Data
Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) data from EPA and other agencies are provided through a number of venues. The HABs Monitoring and Trends page provides links to a variety of data sources providing current and historic trends in near real-time satellite HAB monitoring data from across the U.S.
HABs Monitoring and Trends
Historic state and federal agency (EPA and USGS) HAB data are provided to and stored on the Water Quality Exchange and served through the Water Quality Portal. This includes data on algal toxins as well as phytoplankton along with supporting data including nutrient data. EPA is developing a range of tools to help automate data retrieval and analysis.
- Water Quality Data Upload with WQX
- Water Quality Data Home
- Water Quality Portal – Tools for Automated Data Analysis (TADA)
The National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS) also collect algal composition and toxin data, along with supporting nutrient and other water quality data, in lakes, streams and coastal ecosystems across the U.S.
Anyone can become a HAB monitor. Use the EPA bloomWatch app to begin monitoring and access data collected by volunteer groups across the U.S. Learn what you can do on our volunteer HAB monitoring page.
NOAA serves near real-time coastal monitoring and forecast data for a number of coastal waterbodies and most of these provide links to historic data
