Managing HABs
HABs are a serious threat to drinking and recreational uses in surface waters. HABs, particularly those caused by blue-green algae and their cyanotoxins, can pose risks to humans, wildlife, and pets. As a result, effective HAB management requires, a multi-prong approach that incorporates prevention, proactive planning, active management, and effective risk communication. EPA has developed and facilitated access to methods to monitor, assess, and treat the presence of cyanobacterial cells and their toxins in freshwaters. To support the role of recreational waterbody managers and public water systems in preventing; controlling, treating and/or removing toxins, and communicating risks to users, EPA has developed and facilitated access to a variety of management planning resources.
